Mistake 23 — You didn’t show you care

Why should people care?

It’s a competitive world out there. There are many choices customers have to make each day. They don’t have to buy from you. So why should they?

The reality is they won’t, if you don’t show you care. Showing you care in your interactions with customers will win more trust than any other strategy. Trust is one of the most important things people need from you before they can buy. In fact without it, they can’t buy. There are actually seven things people need to be able to buy from you. I’m going to cover the other six requirements in our last chapter.

It’s easy to get caught up in talking about how great your products or service are. We’ve made it pretty clear through this course, listening more and talking less is key. But you also need to genuinely care about helping the customer. Not just care about the transaction, care about the person.

“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” — John C Maxwell

It doesn’t matter if you’re the most intelligent, knowledgeable person in the world, if you’re an arsehole and you only care about yourself, your customers won’t be interested in doing business with you.

Today’s challenge is to find ways to show you care. How do you go above and beyond? How do you provide that little bit extra? Why should people do business with you?
